Then they asked Him, “What are we
to do, so that we may habitually be doing the works of God?” Jesus
answered, “This is the work of God: that you believe [adhere to,
trust in, rely on, and have faith] in the One Whom He has sent.” So they
said to Him, “What sign (attesting miracle) will You do that we may see it and
believe You? What [supernatural] work will You do [as proof]? John
6:28-30 (AMP)
An interesting scenario plays out
in our text, between Jesus and the multitude that followed Him. This happened
at a time when not only had they seen Jesus perform the notable miracle of
turning water to wine, He had also fed them with just five loaves of bread and
two fishes. If you combine both miracles together, it means you have forever
solved the most vital need of man – what to eat and drink.
The multitude then approached
Jesus again, and this time He opened up to them that they were seeking Him not
because they saw other miracles, but because they ate bread and were filled. They
then put forward the question to Jesus just as you would expect; What shall we
do that we might work the works of God? Sounds so much like telling Jesus that
since you know why we are seeking you, just tell us how we can reproduce these
feats so that we don’t have to be running after you wherever you go because of
bread.
Interestingly, this captures the
very thoughts of many believers today, not in terms of simply desiring the
multiplication of bread alone, but working the works of God in general. Many
truly desire to work the works of God and will do anything possible to be able
to, except the one thing that Jesus recommends – “this is the work of God, that you
believe on Him Whom He hath sent.” In other words, Jesus is saying that
if you must work the works of God, the crucial thing is to believe in the
finished work of Christ. You say is that all? Well, it looks so simple that you
may overlook it and try to get something really hard or something that seems to
justify your efforts, like fasting several days and so on. Understand that
fasting and praying is good as long as you have come to that place where you
believe absolutely in the finished work to see the works that you desire to manifest,
and not in your own fasting and prayers (efforts). The truth is that regardless
of your efforts, or the activities you get involved in, if you overlook this
simple truth, then working the works of God will elude you. You must believe first
that it is finished! The work is complete, and your efforts will not get God to
redo the finished work. It is up to you to come into the reality of that work
by believing in and identifying with it.
Now, even after Jesus had told
them the secret for working the works of God, they still went further to ask
for a sign. My dear, don’t be lost in the crowd and don’t be carried away by
the “activity seeking multitude” in order to please God, or to perform mighty
works. Be assured that as you give yourself to believing, you will produce
mightier works than you have ever imagined.
Shalom!
