I have given help to one
who is mighty;
I have exalted one chosen from the people. (Ps 89:19b).
As I pen down this piece, I could think of
several ways and several instances in which God has helped me in my family and ministry and other areas of life. Of
all the help that I have received, there are a few that really stand out, and
one cannot mistake it for anything other than God stepping in to help the one
He loves.
Everyone of us needs the help of God. Even
those who claim to be self made have received help in one way or the other,
though they fail to acknowledge it. Being alive and well is enough testimonial
to the fact that God is indeed helping you. In my short life, I have come to a
conclusion that except God helps you, you cannot make anything meaningful out
of this life. Life it self is challenging; hence, the help of God is crucial. It
is important to put in your best efforts to make a meaning out of this life,
but ultimately it is God that helps make a true meaning. The apostle Paul
testified to this truth when he said that he planted, Apollos watered, but
ultimately, it was God that gave the increase (1 Cor.3:6). I will go on to share three ways by which God can send
you help;
1. Help from those below or same level
with you – Some people are in the habit of despising others particularly those
that seem to be at a lower level compared to them. The philosophy of the world
is that you should associate only with those who are in the same social class
like you or those above. However, it is good to also associate with those who
seem to be below your class because nothing stops God from sending you help
through such people. In the bible (II
Kgs.5:2-3) we read of a Syrian General, Naaman, as successful as he was, he
was also a leper until help came from a slave girl who pointed him to the
prophet to receive his healing. Saul encountered the prophet only because of
the suggestion of his servant to go get direction on the missing asses. Saul’s
decision to heed the word of the servant positioned him for a lifetime
encounter that made him sit on Israel’s throne. There are several stories of people
who have received help in this manner. You cannot look down on others this
season because they seem to be at a lower level, God in His infinite wisdom may
just have positioned them for your help.
2. Help from higher quarters – God can
also send you help from people who are at a higher level, and this could even
include your parents. There is usually the temptation to look up to those at
higher levels and to think that your help must certainly come from them, but it
isn’t always so, because help comes as God wills. Sometimes we even lobby the
best we can to receive help from such quarters, but I have found out that if
God has not positioned help for you from this area, you will do all you can,
but the help will just not come. David, on ascension of the throne of Israel
requested if there was anyone of the house of Saul to whom he may show kindness
(II Sam.9:3). Mephibosheth was inline
to receive the help from the king, not because he lobbied, but because God
positioned help for him in David. Never fix your eyes on any one as your helper
rather look up to God at all times.
3. Help from the Anointed: The final
way that God can send you help is through the anointed. When God decides to
overwhelm you with His Goodness, He shortens the distance between you and the anointed.
God has positioned anointed men for our help and we must never take that for
granted. The bible speaks of the Jewish leaders rebuilding the walls of
Jerusalem with the prophets of the Lord helping them (Ezra 5:2). The Shunammite woman in II Kgs. 4 was wealthy, but she
was barren, until her encounter with the anointed, then she brought forth a son.
The bible is flooded with stories of ordinary people who become outstanding
figures in history through the help of the anointed. David was an anonymous
fellow not even to be counted in his family meeting until he encountered the
anointed, and that encounter propelled him to the throne.
Now, these are various ways by which God can
send you help, but bear in mind that it is the prerogative of God to use any of
these channels as it pleases Him. The word of caution is that you must not turn
to any channel of God’s help to make it the source of help. Ultimately God is
the source of our help and He can channel help through any of the channels we
have discussed. Look to God alone and He will always come through for you.
