Commitment to do the Word

 

But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. James 1:25 (NKJV)

 

In the bible passage above, take note of the emphasis I added on the word doer. Over the years I have found out that this word can be the differentiator between a believer who lives a very ordinary life, and a victorious believer. Even though some may choose to differ on this, it stands obvious. There are far too many believers who would rather talk the word than do the word. Like the saying goes, it is not how much you know, but what you do with what you know. What good is it if you know so much of the word, but barely do it? The word cannot profit such a life. 

 

You see, sometimes it is easy to find an excuse to do other things other than the word. It can even be easier sometimes to hide under the cover of praying than to do the word. For instance, the word says in 2 Cor. 9:6; He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. If you are not doing the part of sowing bountifully according to the word, you are not going to reap bountifully. It is that simple and spending long hours in prayer won't change it.

 

Our commitment to doing the word of God will determine how far we can go in our walk with the Lord, and in life generally. Some people are trying the word when they should be doing the word, but the scripture does not say that the trier of the word will be blessed, it says that the doer will be blessed in what he does. You need to make a firm commitment to do the word. If the word says not to worry, don’t worry, if the word says to rejoice, then rejoice, if the word says to walk in love, then walk in love. Don’t just try it, do it! No other thing can substitute for doing what the word says to do. 

 

Someone may say I tried the word, but it didn’t work out for me, when in actual fact, it is the word that is trying you. Psalm 105:19 says, Until the time that his word came to pass, the word of the Lord tested him. The word of God has already been tried and proven. The scripture says in Psalm 12:6, The words of the Lord are pure words, like silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times. The word is worth its value and it always works. So, we shouldn’t be trying the word, we should be doing it. Doing connotes something that is continuous, not something you attempt once, and give up. Keep on doing the word and never give up on it because the word always works.  

 

To be a doer of the word, you need to make a quality decision as Kenneth Copeland puts it. Let the word take priority in your life, and be quick to act on it. This will certainly not be easy all the time, because there will be times when it looks like you can figure out your own way, but you can trust in God’s grace to hold you through your commitment to doing the word. I know your life will definitely take a leap forward as you make this commitment and abide by it.
