Be an Influential Witness


A witness is a person who testifies to events or facts within his own knowledge. It means that once you have encountered Jesus and accepted Him as Saviour and Lord of your life, you are automatically a witness for Jesus. 

My goal in this short piece is not to show again that God is reconciling the world to Himself through us, but to show that we can genuinely influence others for the Lord by being excellent in everything we do. What many are doing is direct evangelizing, and this is great, because that has its place as an important part of being a witness, but Jesus didn’t just say we shall evangelize to the world, rather He said that we shall be witnesses.

Acts. 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (KJV)

So, what does it mean to be a witness in this sense? It is to let your life reflect the very essence of Jesus, and to model Him to the world around you in character, in excellence, in the demonstration of the Spirit and power. Anything short of this will not pass as a reflection of an influential Witness of Christ.

When you fail as an influential witness in the manner described, what happens is that you deny others the opportunity to have an experience of what it really means to be a true Christian, hence, the reason why some of your evangelization effort may not have been as effective as ought to be. People will observe you, before they listen to you, or they will listen to you, and observe your manner of life. If your life doesn’t not align with the excellence of the kingdom of God that you preach, they would rather turn elsewhere, but if your life demonstrates the character and excellence of the kingdom, you are likely to win them over more easily.

Are am I saying you should not bother to evangelize? No, not at all, I am saying that your evangelism exercises are likely to be more successful when you take your place as an influential witness. Imagine for a moment, a worker who does shabby work, and everyone, including co-workers, customers and neighbors know about this worker, and everyone knows about the troubles that he has had because of his poor work and lifestyle. How could such a person effectively represent Christ or preach to someone to become a Christian? On the flip side, if someone modelled the excellence and character of God’s kingdom in everything, even before he preaches to others, they are already desiring to be like him, and that really is the point about being an influential witness.

Take up the challenge to be an influential witness of Jesus, be the answer to the questions in the heart of people about what their lives should truly be like as Christians. Be excellent in your private life and in your marriage, be excellent in your work and business, be excellent in any assignment committed to you, be excellent in everything you do. People are watching you, they need someone they can truly follow, and they want to know if they can follow your life example, if it will lead them to the Christ, the anointed one.
